Innovation has no limits. We have all come across this phrase at one time or another, but perhaps we have never stopped to think about how true this statement is. There are a great many patents registered in the world, some more useful and accessible than others.
Patents can be granted on technological inventions, from an everyday kitchen utensil to a nanotechnology chip.
But there are also more extravagant patents that, because of their genius or craziness, catch our attention. Here are some examples of outlandish patents over the last few decades.
Device for moistening the adhesive layer of envelopes and postage stamps (1981)
Although handwritten letters seem a thing of the past today, there are those who still enjoy the noble art of handwritten correspondence. In 1981, Donald B. Poynter patented a solution for anyone who disliked the taste of glue on envelopes and postage stamps, leaving behind having to do it yourself with your tongue.
Wearable table (1995)
Made for situations where you have to eat in a hurry and on the go! This rigid table-tray allows you to eat, write, and do many other tasks anywhere.
Automatic Shower Device (2020)
Tired after a long day and don’t feel like jumping in the shower? In 2020, Son, Young Gil; Kwon, Yeong Taek; Lee, Jae Ho; Kim, Yang Soo; and Kim, Kyung Tae patented this automatic shower device. Capable of automatically washing the body, scrubbing the skin and drying it, it is intended for people with reduced mobility. But tiredness and laziness could lead to its widespread use.
Automatic bed-making system (1999)
We end this series of extravagant patents with another automatic system, this time for making the bed! Isn’t it an activity that we all find rather tedious? Well, since 1999, Tabor Browder has solved this “problem”. This device spreads the sheets over the pillows and adjusts them with great precision. I’m sure more than one would invest in such a device.
These are just a few examples of thousands of quirky patents that have been filed over the years, proving that, believe it or not, anything can be invented and, in many cases, patented.
